US sanctions DJI and 7 other Chinese companies over alleged Xinjiang human rights abuses

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO The US Treasury Department added eight more Chinese companies to an investment blacklist on December 17, 2021, for alleged involvement in the surveillance of Muslim minority people in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The world’s top commercial drone maker DJI Technology and artificial intelligence (AI) giant Megvii were among the companies, meaning US investors will be barred from buying or selling their shares. The move came a day after dozens of Chinese companies were added to Washington’s “entity list” that restricts American companies from selling components to the firms without a licence. China has long been accused of imposing forced assimilation policies on its Uygur ethnic minority in Xinjiang, but has repeatedly denied the allegations and defended its policies in the western region. Beijing says it is trying to manage ethnic tensions, fight extremism and reduce poverty by developing the resource-rich region into a trade route to Central Asia.
