First death linked to Omicron in UK as China records its first case of the coronavirus variant

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the previous day that he expected a “tidal wave of Omicron” and that everyone above 18 will be offered booster jabs by the end of 2021. Two travellers from the UK also tested positive for the virus strain after arriving in Hong Kong on December 13, prompting the city to add Britain to its list of highest-risk countries requiring stricter travel control rules. Cases of Omicron have spread to more than 50 countries after first being reported in South Africa on November 24. Mainland China reported its first Omicron case in the northern city of Tianjin on December 13. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
