Smoke-free generation: New Zealand to ban cigarette sales for people born after 2008

Currently, the legal age for purchasing cigarettes is 18. The result will mean that those who are aged 14 and under today will never be legally able to buy tobacco. The government will also reduce the number of shops that can sell tobacco starting in 2024 and allow only tobacco products containing very low levels of nicotine to be sold after 2025. Creating a smoke-free generation is part of the government’s campaign to reduce the prevalence of smoking in New Zealand to less than five per cent in all population groups, which it aims to achieve by 2025. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
