U.K. breaks daily Covid-19 record as Omicron likely to become dominant strain in E.U. by mid-January

The UK government expects the number of infections and hospitalisations to continue rising, but it does not plan to roll out further restrictions for now. On the European mainland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the new coronavirus variant Omicron will become the dominant strain in the 27-nation bloc by mid-January 2022. Across Europe, countries have begun adopting new measures with Germany, Spain, Greece and Hungary starting to vaccinate children ages five-11. First reported in South Africa on November 24, Omicron has since spread to more than 77 countries as of December 16. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
