Putin recognises 2 separatist regions in Ukraine, dulling hopes for US-Russia summit

Putin's recognition of rebel-held areas could provide a pretext to move his troops across the border. The US, EU and Britain have responded with economic sanctions on the region. President Joe Biden earlier agreed “in principle” to meet Putin on the condition that Russia does not invade Ukraine, a summit now likely to be cancelled. US officials have also alleged that Russia has a “hit-list” of Ukrainians to be killed or sent to camps in the event of an invasion. In the past weeks, increased Russian troop build-up, military drills in Ukraine’s northern neighbour Belarus, shelling and rebel mobilisation in eastern Ukraine have continued to raise fears of an imminent invasion. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
