'Happy to be where he is': Kaavan the elephant's new lease on life in Cambodian sanctuary

Kaavan's story made international headlines after a campaign was started to free him from the Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he had lived for more than three decades. Many of those years were spent in chains, as zoo staff did not know how to care for or control Kaavan. After a six-year campaign, Kaavan was freed and relocated to the Cambodia WildlIfe Sanctuary in November 2020. Now, more than a year since his arrival, Kaavan is roaming freely in a 30-acre (12ha) enclosure and has developed a bond with his new caretaker Pedro Vella and Mut, his mahout. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
