Bodies pile up at hospitals and mortuaries as Hong Kong records 34,466 new Covid-19 cases

A source has told the Post that officials are considering storing bodies in refrigerated containers if the situation calls for it. The news comes as Hong Kong reported a record 34,466 new infections and 124 more deaths, on February 28, 2022. The city’s health secretary also said officials are not ruling out imposing a lockdown when it begins its compulsory testing scheme in March. In a recorded speech broadcast on Hong Kong television, the city’s leader Carrie Lam announced the government’s plans to secure more isolation rooms and beds for infected residents. (Photo: SCMP / K. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
