Nepal police fire tear gas to disperse pro-Beijing protest over US$500m aid grant from the US

The money is being provided by the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) under an agreement the organisation signed with the Nepali government in 2017. The grant will be used to build a power line to carry electricity to the Indian border and for road improvement. But Nepal’s pro-Beijing politicians said accepting the funds could undermine Nepali sovereignty. The issue has divided the ruling coalition headed by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Nepali Congress party. China has sent a message saying it will not sit idly if the development activities in Nepal undermine its interests, according to Nepal’s former ambassador in Beijing Mahendra Bahadur Pandey. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
