Infected domestic helpers become homeless amid Hong Kong’s fifth Covid-19 wave: NGOs

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/graDq1w According to several migrant workers rights groups, at least 30 foreign domestic workers were forced to sleep on the streets or were denied treatment after testing positive for Covid-19 amid a surge in infections in Hong Kong. HELP for Domestic Workers, one of the local NGOs, has supported over 60 migrant domestic workers who have tested positive for Covid-19 with shelter or food, medicine and any other necessities. Every weekend, Hong Kong’s Central district is normally crowded with domestic helpers who gather there on their day off. But under updated social distancing rules banning gatherings of more than two people, only a few of them could be seen around the city centre while inter-departmental government joint operations were conducted appealing to foreign domestic workers to obey the regulations. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
