Hong Kong imposes toughest social-distancing rules yet as Covid-19 caseload hits another record high

The news came as the city recorded a new high in daily cases for the third straight day. In addition to bars and gyms, religious venues and hair salons will temporarily close starting February 10. Public gatherings will also be capped at two while most restaurants will only be allowed two people per table. A new “vaccine pass” will also take effect on February 24, requiring proof of vaccination before entering shopping centres, wet markets and eateries. The tighter restrictions also ban two or more families from gathering at private premises. As of February 8, 2022, the city has confirmed 15,063 Covid-19 cases and 213 deaths. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
