Belarus set to renounce ‘non-nuclear status’, clearing hurdle for nuclear weapons acquisition

The vote approved plans for the country to adopt a new constitution renouncing its non-nuclear status, which it has held since declaring independence in 1991. The country’s pro-Putin leader Alexander Lukashenko also had his term in office extended until 2035. In recent days the country has served as a launch pad for Russian troops invading Ukraine. There are now reports suggesting that Belarus is preparing to send troops to join Russian forces entering Ukraine.
