Xi warns Biden that US ‘playing with fire’ as tensions soar over Pelosi’s proposed Taiwan visit

A proposed trip to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has angered Beijing, which views visits by US officials and politicians as a violation of mainland China’s sovereignty over the self-ruled island. During the call, Biden reiterated that Washington’s one-China policy would not change and that the US did not support Taiwanese independence. But Biden added that he is leaving the decision about a Taiwan trip up to Pelosi. As House Speaker, Pelosi is second in line in the US presidential line of succession. If the trip reportedly planned for August goes ahead, she would be the first speaker to visit Taiwan since 1997. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
