Indonesia and Japan boost naval security ties amid concern over China’s South China Sea actions

The leaders pledged to bolster maritime security ties between their countries, further reinforcing Indonesian maritime security capability “to ensure peace and safety at sea in the Indo-Pacific region”. Japan’s Self-Defence Forces will also participate for the first time in Indonesia’s annual Garuda Shield military exercises. The drills set to be held in Indonesia in August will be the largest yet, with troops from Indonesia, the US, Singapore, Australia and Japan involved. Japan and Indonesia also agreed to boost cooperation on climate change, energy and investment between the Asian archipelago nations. Widodo’s Tokyo visit followed a stop in Beijing where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
