North Korean defectors shown dragged back across the border from South Korea

At the time of the 2019 deportation, the government of then-president Moon Jae-in called the fishermen “dangerous criminals”, who had killed 16 fellow shipmates in a fight over an abusive captain before the ship crossed the sea border. The current South Korean president has revisited repatriation cases in a recent show of support to defectors. The UN has also said South Korea likely violated the men’s rights.
