Wildfires scorch southern Europe amid record heatwave

Thousands of firefighters were deployed to battle forest fires across Spain, Greece, Portugal and France. As of July 17, 2022, 659 people in Portugal, mostly elderly, died in the past week from the heatwave, according to the country’s Health Ministry. Temperatures exceeded 40° Celsius (104°F) in most parts of Spain, while Portugal reached a high of 47° Celsius (116.6°F).
