Russia strikes Mariupol steel plant that has become Ukraine’s stronghold in strategic city

Russia’s defence ministry estimated that 2,500 Ukrainian troops and about 400 foreign mercenaries are dug in at the steel plant in the southeastern port city. The Mariupol City Council said at least 1,000 civilians were also hiding in underground shelters of the Azovstal plant, which consists of myriad buildings, blast furnaces and rail tracks. One of Europe’s largest metal mills, the plant produced over 4 million tonnes (4.4 million tons) of steel annually before Russia’s invasion. Capturing Mariupol would be Russia’s biggest victory after weeks of costly fighting since its February 20 invasion began. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
