Bongbong Marcos Jnr leads in polls in final weeks of Philippine presidential election campaigning

Known by his childhood nickname “Bongbong”, Marcos is the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who during his martial law regime tortured and murdered thousands of Filipinos. Critics accuse candidate Marcos of using social media and misinformation to target young voters, many of whom have no memory of life under his father’s rule. While Leni Robredo, the current vice-president, is riding a recent wave of popularity, the latest surveys from March show Marcos Jnr continues to lead in opinion polls despite falling from 60 per cent to 56 per cent. Robredo’s support in the survey improved slightly from 15 per cent to 24 per cent. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
