Kim is said to have been an 11-year-old when he set out from his school in what was then known as Manchuria – northeast China today – to walk back to his home in the village of Mangyongdae which now part of North Korea’s capital Pyongyang. Every year since 1975, selected students have recreated the journey as part of a two-week study programme.
