Fuminori Tsuchiko was a tourist in Ukraine just before the Russian invasion and decided to return as a volunteer to help Kharkiv residents driven underground by Russian shelling. After seven months living and working in a subway station, the 75-year-old opened Fumi Caffe in December 2022. It feeds 500 people a day, and has become an internet sensation. Most of the donations used to pay for the food come from Japan.
