Indian man demands rare crane’s freedom after forming extraordinary bond

Mohammad Arif rescued the injured Sarus crane, a crimson-necked wetlands species that can grow up to 1.8 metres (6ft) in height, and nursed it back to health. Their friendship was interrupted in March when authorities took the crane away to a zoo in the Indian city of Kanpur, where the farmer drove four hours to visit the bird and issue his plea for the crane’s freedom.
