‘We sleep outside’: growing desperation among Afghan quake victims as aid reaches remote area

Thousands of people have been left homeless or injured in Paktika and Khost provinces where the quake killed at least 1,150 people and an aftershock on June 24 took another five lives. The initial quake was measured at magnitude 6.1 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre and 5.9 by the US Geological Survey. Afghanistan had already been reeling from a humanitarian crisis, with the flow of aid and financial assistance curtailed since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. Aid organisations have in the past accused the Taliban of diverting assistance to people who support their rule . Khan Mohammad Ahmad, a senior official in Paktika, said relief efforts would not be interfered with. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
