Protesters detained in India after violent clash over new military recruitment scheme

Dozens of people were detained on June 19, 2022, as police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters who had taken to the streets and damaged government buildings to protests against the policy. The scheme announced June 14 calls for young adults to be admitted into the armed forces for a period of four years and 75 per cent of the recruits taken in from 2022 must retire after their terms with no pension benefits. The new plan is a major departure from the past when military service was usually seen as a lifetime job, and comes as the nation’s unemployment rate is at its worst level since the 1970s. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
