Deadly series of earthquakes rock China’s southwestern province of Sichuan

The latest quake on June 8 was measured at magnitude 6.1. The swarm has been reported in the same area where 196 people were killed by a major quake in April 2013. The central government has ordered an emergency response and sent about 4,500 local rescuers to the earthquake zone. The casualties were reported from the first earthquake on June 1, which was recorded at about 5pm at a depth of 17km (10.5 miles), with an epicentre 113km from the provincial capital of Chengdu. It was followed three minutes by a 4.5-magnitude quake a few kilometres away. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
