Commemorations mark China’s 1989 Tiananmen crackdown around world as vigil silenced in Hong Kong

Among those attending June 4, 2022, events were immigrants from Hong Kong, where an annual candlelight vigil was banned for the third year in a row. The Hongkongers said overseas memorials have become more significant since such events were banned in their home city by authorities citing Covid-19 pandemic health concerns. Before the vigils were halted in 2020, Hong Kong was the only place on Chinese soil where large-scale commemorations took place to mourn pro-democracy demonstrators killed in the 1989 crackdown in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Fishermen rescued by Korean coast guard in fatal Chinese boat accident #shorts

Search teams with the Korean coast guard have pulled another fisherman from the sea after rescuing at least 12 others in a fatal fishing boat accident off the southwestern coast of South Korea. Fifteen men were working on the Chinese vessel when it capsized in rough seas, killing at least four fishermen. The South Korean coast guard is continuing the search on October 21, 2021, for at least two people who remain missing.
