Farmers forced to leave their land to make way for Hong Kong government’s redevelopment plan

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/6FcRLnY The Hong Kong government is forging ahead with a plan to improve Tsui Keng, an agricultural district north of the city’s urban areas. The project involves work to improve drainage, irrigation and access, but it has been met with opposition from farmers who say it might do more harm than good. Farmers who have worked the land for years say they worry about pollution from construction work, and have accused the government of clearing their fields without enough notice. But the government says it will be providing training in new farming techniques and other support that will help farmers increase their yields. A Chinese father's unrelenting search for his daughter who vanished 15 years ago

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/LdBy68F Thousands of girls and women have been kidnapped over the decades in China. Experts say the major reason behind the trafficking of women is gender imbalance sparked by the country’s previous one-child policy, which has led to parents favouring boys over girls. Many of the abducted girls or women remain missing despite a government pledge to severely crack down on child trafficking. Among the parents still looking for their missing children is Beijing resident Yau Fuji, who has vowed to continue a 15-year search for his daughter, who went missing when she was just 14 years old. Palestinian worshippers have been angered by repeated visits to the site by Jewish worshippers, who are permitted to enter but may not pray there. Israeli police said its forces intervened when hundreds of people began hurling rocks and fireworks. Understanding long Covid: why researchers are turning to gut bacteria for answers

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/LhmJiVz Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have identified gut bacteria patterns that may be used to predict, diagnose and help treat long Covid. Professor Siew Chien Ng, associate director of the university’s Centre for Gut Microbiota Research, says a simple stool test can tell recovered Covid-19 patients their risks of suffering the effects of long Covid with 90 per cent accuracy. The initial study involved stool samples from more than 100 patients, with researchers set to increase the sample size to between 3,000-5,000 to improve the accuracy of results, Professor Ng tells the Post’s Alkira Reinfrank. The team is also set to conduct a clinical trial of a “microbiome immunity formula” to reduce the risk of Covid patients developing long Covid in the future. Bongbong Marcos Jnr leads in polls in final weeks of Philippine presidential election campaigning

Known by his childhood nickname “Bongbong”, Marcos is the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who during his martial law regime tortured and murdered thousands of Filipinos. Critics accuse candidate Marcos of using social media and misinformation to target young voters, many of whom have no memory of life under his father’s rule. While Leni Robredo, the current vice-president, is riding a recent wave of popularity, the latest surveys from March show Marcos Jnr continues to lead in opinion polls despite falling from 60 per cent to 56 per cent. Robredo’s support in the survey improved slightly from 15 per cent to 24 per cent. Related story: Can Robredo’s ‘pink wave’ reverse the Marcos tide in Philippine poll? h

Covid wave paralyses Shanghai’s food deliveries

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/EiPdGIF Food deliveries in China’s financial and commercial hub, Shanghai, normally can be easily ordered with just a few swipes on a mobile phone. But as the country’s most populous city tackles its most serious wave of Covid-19 infections, lockdown measures have confined most of the city’s 25 million residents to their homes. As a result, food logistics have been severely hit and daily necessities are increasingly hard to come by. Hong Kong’s only trash incinerator struggles to cope with vast amounts of Covid medical waste

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/EiPdGIF Hong Kong’s only waste incinerator is struggling to deal with vast amounts of medical waste generated by the city’s fifth wave of Covid-19. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
