Nearly 40 per cent of the nation’s people are now estimated to live below the poverty line with hundreds of thousands unemployed. Unlike most countries, selling or buying organs is not regulated in Afghanistan. The practice has become so widespread in the Injil district of the western province of Herat, that the community of Sayshanba Bazaar has earned the grim nickname "one-kidney village”.
