Elephant ‘food court’ built in southwestern China to encourage wild herds not to stray

The Jinghong Food Base for Wild Asian Elephants was a response to the widely followed story of a herd that went on a 500km (300-mile) journey that lasted for months starting in December 2020. The group of at least 15 elephants caused headaches along the way, raiding farms and shops along their way including in areas near the provincial capital Kunming where they ended up in June. The 67 hectare (165 acre) “food court” has been stocked with 38,000 banana trees and saltwater ponds built for the animals. Organisers hope the facility will be more attractive than crops in nearby villages. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
