Bat viruses being studied in Cambodia to gain new coronavirus pandemic insights

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO Bat researchers in Cambodia are on a mission to help track the origins of the pandemic by collecting samples from horseshoe bats in the country’s northern regions near Laos. Coronaviruses considered very similar to Covid-19 were found in animals in the area a decade ago, and in bats as recently as 2020. Bats have been found to carry deadly viruses including Ebola, as well coronaviruses that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers). The eight-member research team was gathering samples from bats and logging their species, sex, age and other information in August 2021, and they will also study the role of wildlife trading as a factor in the pandemic. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
