Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang has set a goal of getting vaccines into the arms of 70 per cent of the city’s estimated over 1 million students aged 12 to 18 by November, when there are plans to reopen schools closed since December 2020. From October 4 onwards, the Thai government planned to vaccinate students aged 12 to 18 nationwide. In Hong Kong, UK, France and some other countries, children as young as 12 have been offered shots. US President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci also said Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are likely to be approved for children ages 5 to 11 in the US before Halloween. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
