Australia sees Covid-19 vaccine mandate protests continue for third day in Melbourne

For the third straight day, demonstrators marched in the capital of the southeastern state of Victoria to oppose Covid-19 lockdowns and mandatory vaccine rules in the construction industry. Riot police and mounted units later cleared and reportedly arrested more than 200 protesters at the city’s Shrine of Remembrance, a local war memorial. This followed the two-week shutdown of construction sites after violent clashes broke out between workers and other protesters, leading to the arrests of 60 people. The Victoria state government now requires all workers to have at least one jab before construction can restart, beginning on October 5, to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
