China deploys emergency rescuers after deadly earthquake in Sichuan province kills 3 and injures 100

Thousands of rescuers have been mobilised to distribute tents, summer quilts and folding beds to more than 80,000 people evacuated. Rescuers also distributed food, including mooncakes, a traditional treat for next week’s Mid-Autumn Festival. The earthquake struck at 4.33am at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles) in Lu county in Luzhou city. The epicentre was about 200 kilometres (124 miles) southeast of the provincial capital Chengdu. State media reported that three people died and 100 were injured in the quake that destroyed over 29,000 homes and disrupted multiple electrical power lines. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
