UK bans travel from South Africa after emergence of new heavily-mutated Covid-19 variant

The strain, which has the scientific designation B.1.1.529, has at least 10 mutations, compared to two for Delta and three for Beta. Concerns over transmissibility and vaccine effectiveness on the new variant has prompted the United Kingdom to impose a travel ban on six southern African countries. In Hong Kong, a patient whose ‘selfish’ valve mask was blamed for a cross infection in a quarantine hotel, has also been found to be carrying the new B.1.1.529 variant. Experts are still trying to determine whether it is more transmissible and lethal than other Covid-19 strains. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
