Myanmar jade traders caught between the military junta and anti-coup dissidents

The nation’s jade industry has long supported the financing of the military, which seized power on February 1, 2021, after staging a coup and detaining pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The junta has since warned jade shops that if they failed to reopen by November 5, 2021, they could be “temporarily seized”. Meanwhile, anti-coup dissidents have targeted junta-controlled trading activities, including at the Mandalay market which was closed for months because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Dissident group Generation Z has reportedly staged two attacks since the market reopened on October 12, with the second blast on November 4 killing a police officer.
