Hong Kong’s unique weather station certified as the first 100-year-old high-altitude observatory

The honours from the UN’s World Meteorological Organization were awarded in June 2021, 100 years after the facility started in 1921 in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district. In the early days, scientists launched pilot weather balloons by hand, tracking them with telescopes to calculate wind speeds and directions. The arrival of radiosonde in the 1940s, allowed the station to start tracking temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Now relocated to the nearby King's Park, the centenarian observatory is focused on understanding the impact of extreme weather related to climate change, and on sharing their insights with counterparts around the world. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
