China pledges 1 billion vaccine jabs for Africa amid growing fear about Omicron coronavirus strain

Amid growing fears about how the new variant will impact the pandemic fight, China has promised 1 billion vaccine doses to help African nation’s vaccinate 60 per cent of the continent’s population by 2022. Chinese President Xi Jinping made the pledge via video link from Beijing in a speech to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation on November 29. China has already provided more than 1.7 billion doses to more than 110 countries and organisations. Only 7 per cent of Africa’s population has been fully vaccinated so far, and the World Health Organization has warned that uneven vaccine distribution could lead to more coronavirus variants emerging. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
