Excavation ‘super shield’ to bore first train tunnel under Yangtze River in Shanghai

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/qEJuIhQ A giant boring-machine shield, designed to excavate a 7.74km (4.81-mile) underwater tunnel for the new Chongming metro line in Shanghai, was put into position on September 12, 2022, on Changxing island, to begin work on the latest metro line for the city. The new line will be the first to go under the Yangtze River in Shanghai. It will connect the Shanghai mainland to the neighbouring river island of Chongming, the third-largest island in China, via the much smaller Changxing Island. It will add to the city’s large and complex metro system that has 20 lines covering 830km (515.7 miles). Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
