UN seeks US$5 billion as winter kicks in and Afghans face ‘full-blown humanitarian catastrophe’

The UN has launched its biggest-ever appeal, seeking more than US$5 billion to help the country described as being on the brink of a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse. The joint appeal seeks US$4.4 billion for the UN and its humanitarian partners to help 22 million people in Afghanistan, about half the country’s population. It calls for US$623 million for the 5.7 million Afghans who fled abroad to neighbouring Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) has started distributing “winterisation kits” to Afghan families living in camps for displaced people in the northwestern Herat province. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
