The game is very popular in Hong Kong, where traditional arcade-style venues, which have largely disappeared from other places, still exist. Hong Kong university student Leung Wang-hoi started playing in April 2022, enchanted by the game’s unique eight-button design. Beijing described the balloon as an “unmanned airship employed for civilian purposes” that had accidentally deviated from its planned course. Eyewitness video taken on February 1, 2023, showed what appears to be a large white balloon over the northwestern state of Montana.
