He lost his wife and two daughters in the football stampede that killed at least 131 people, after police fired tear gas to disperse angry fans of the losing team. He was separated from his family and only managed to hold on to his two-year-old son. Hariyanto later found the bodies of his two teenage daughters among the crowd in the stadium, while his wife succumbed to her injuries in hospital. He has vowed to never watch a football match again.
