Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba told CNN that around 20,000 international volunteers have come to help shore up Ukraine’s defences. The volunteers have responded to calls by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to join an “international legion” he created to bolster his nation’s defences. Ahead of the planned mass testing, shelves have been emptied in shops and supermarkets over panic-buying across the city. Asylum seekers and refugees receive a monthly government subsidy of HK$1,200 (US$154) in food cards, which can only be used at one designated supermarket. NGO Christian Action, based in Hong Kong’s Chungking Mansions, received an overwhelming response from its Facebook appeal, with people from all walks of life donating various supplies, from food to Covid-19 self-test kits.
