Video of 90-year-old Hong Kong hawker pleading with officers after her cart was seized goes viral

The incident happened on the evening of March 6, 2023. The licensed hawker initially said she had left her stall with her partner, who is unlicensed, to use the toilet and returned to find the cart surrounded by officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. Two days later, she told the Post she had gone home after using the washroom and was called back to the stall by her partner. Hygiene officers seized the chestnut stall for illegal hawking. The elderly vendor pleaded with the officers, who then called backup from the police. A video taken by a Post reporter shows the woman pleading with officers, saying she had relied on selling roasted chestnuts to make a living, for decades. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
