Inside Kherson, the first Ukrainian city to fall under full Russian control

One week after Moscow’s invasion began on February 24, it became the first city or region of Ukraine to fall under full control of Russian troops. Moscow-backed officials are reportedly now pushing for formal annexation of Kherson, and its residents are anxious about the city's future after an estimated 45 per cent of its 300,000 inhabitants fled, along with about 20 per cent of the population of the surrounding region. Control of Kherson and partial occupation of the neighbouring region of Zaporizhzhia offers Moscow a chance to build a strategic land bridge between Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine to Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
