60 feared dead in Ukraine’s east Luhansk region after Russian air strike levels village school

According to the governor of the Luhansk region, where the school of Bilogorivka village is located, up to 60 people hiding in the school are feared dead, including many civilians. Governor Serhiy Haidai said the school was hit on the morning of May 8, 2022, and that a fire that followed made it unlikely anyone survived apart from the 30 that have already been rescued. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine enters its third month, vast areas of Ukraine’s east have come under an intensified Russian assault ahead of Russia’s May 9 Victory Day, a militaristic holiday commemorating the Soviet Union’s defeat of the Nazis in World War II. Daily medical waste levels are said to be twice that of the incinerator’s capacity. From March 19-23, 2022, the city generated over three times more clinical waste each day , compared to the same period in 2021, according to the city’s Environmental Protection Department. Clinical waste refers to potentially harmful substances generated by clinics, hospitals and laboratories, including used syringes and body tissue. They cannot be recycled and must be incinerated or buried in a landfill due to their potential health risks. Heavy reliance on single-use food containers and Covid-19 rapid test kits have also contributed to the rising level of wastes, some of which are now buried in a landfill in the New Territories.
