Located in the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex, the plant is 35km (22 miles) from the capital Hanoi. It can process 4,000 tonnes of household garbage within 24 hours, accounting for over 50 per cent of the waste generated in Hanoi. The US$300 million facility will be the second-largest waste-to-energy plant. The world’s largest, located in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, has a processing capacity of 5,000 tonnes per day. The new strain, also known as B.1.1.529, is the most mutated form of the virus recorded so far and the fifth variant to be given a special designation. It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible than previously identified variants and the severity of related cases, including among vaccinated people, is also not yet fully understood. Clarin formed a close bond with the 12 Afghan agricultural specialists on her team known as “Caroline's guys”. But since the programme was shut down in 2011 forcing Clarin to head home, she has grown increasingly concerned about the men and their families who faced Taliban retaliation for working with Americans. Over the past four years, she and her partner have invested their time and savings to try and get them out of Afghanistan, and away from risks which have grown since the militants recently regained control of the country. It is the largest freshwater lake in southwest China, but also the country’s most polluted. After decades of monitoring and reporting on polluters, Zhang, who is now in his 70s, saw local officials finally brought to justice for damaging the environment around the scenic lake. The scandal involved more than 1,000 villas that were illegally built in the conservation area of the lake.
