The government has brought in a wide-ranging import ban to stop foreign currency from leaving the country. Digging to survive: former Afghan soldiers and police officers hunt emeralds in Panjshir Valley

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO Local people in Afghanistan’s remote Panjshir Valley have known for centuries about the presence of emeralds in the mountainous region, where organised mining has taken place since the 1970s. Afghans have struggled to survive as the nation teeters on the brink of economic collapse and unemployment soars after the Taliban regained power in August 2021. Massive coral reef discovered off Tahiti appears to be untouched by climate change

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO Explorers on a scientific research mission have discovered one of the largest coral reefs in the world off the coast of Tahiti, Unesco announced on January 20, 2022. The reef is about 3km (2 miles) long and consists of giant, rose-shaped corals. Sitting more than 30 metres (98ft) below the surface, the reef was discovered in an area of the sea known as the mesophotic zone – derived from the Greek words for “middle” and “light”. Its location much deeper than where most known coral reefs are found suggests that it could be safer from the impact of seawater warming that has damaged shallower reefs around the world. Sinopec says new wells tapped ultra-deep fault zones discovered in 2016, which are at high pressure and temperature, making them among the world’s most difficult to explore. Sinopec said that in line with China’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by about 2060, the company has also started building the world’s largest green hydrogen plant. Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO Hong Kong saw 140 new Covid-19 cases on January 23, 2022, its highest daily increase since July 2020. All of the residents have been issued compulsory testing orders with two buildings in the housing estate placed under a five-day lockdown, while four others were sealed off for 24 hours. Shanghai remains optimistic amid China's recent Covid-19 outbreak

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://ift.tt/2qHOrkO Compared with most countries in the world, China has had a very low death rate during the Covid-19 pandemic, a record authorities attribute to the nation’s “zero-tolerance” approach to fighting the disease. It adopted strict quarantine policies for foreign travellers and sometimes locked down whole cities to stem the flow of infection. But with the rise of highly infectious variants like Delta and Omicron, China has regularlybeen recording more than a hundred Covid cases each day since late December. The current wave of Covid-19 prompted China to lock down the city of Xi’an. But the country’s most populous city, Shanghai, has adopted more targeted measures in infection control. Rather than locking down entire districts and carrying out large-scale Covid-19 testing, the city has limited its response to smaller lockdowns and vaccine drives. The government-backed Purple Mountain Laboratories said in a statement on January 5, 2022, that a research team had achieved a wireless transmission speed of 206.25 gigabits per second, a world record for real-time wireless transmission. The 6G speed recorded was about 10-20 times faster than current 5G technology in China. Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the speed achieved was 100 times faster than 5G, an increase some wireless technology experts say 6G could ultimately achieve.
