Once China’s highest-earning actress, Fan disappeared from public view after being caught up in a tax evasion scandal in July 2018. Chinese authorities ordered Fan to pay 892 million yuan (US$129 million) for tax evasion and other offences in October 2018. Fan plays a down-and-out migrant worker in the film by Chinese director Han Shuai making its debut at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.
